The new landmark of Ormoc City was unveiled this morning as the city celebrates its 76th 'Adlaw sa Ormoc', October 20, 2023.
It was led by Ormoc City Mayor Lucy Torres Gomez and her husband, Leyte 4th District Representative Richard I. Gomez together with the members of the 16th sangguniang panlungsod, department heads.
Michael Cacnio, the creator of the ‘Family’ sculpture is also present.
The significance of the “FAMILY” statue:
“The family, is the smallest unit in our society, much like the atoms that make up everything in the universe.
Its size is no reflection of its strength, for ironically, it is the family bond that proves the strongest.
The Filipino family possesses a most peculiar bond.
One built on as many tears and laughter as hardships and success.
The Ormocanon family is made up of all the familial bonds that keep our homes together.
This city is built on the smiles, love, devotion and loyalty that sustain each of our families.
Mabuhi ang Ormocanong pamilya sa karon, sa kanunay.”
The artwork is the first marker of the City of Ormoc’s Seal of Good Local Governance awarded by the Department of the Interior and Local Government on December 15, 2022 at the Manila Hotel, City of Manila attesting to the city’s achievement of good local governance by upholding the standards of transparency, integrity and service delivery.
“The Ormocanon Family symbolizes the deepest core value of this city and the Ormocanon people. It is the family unit that we protect, and the rationale for attaining safety, peace and order.
It is to whom we dedicate the city’s social protection, financial administration and sustainable development. This art represents the city’s commitment to nurture the Ormocanon family with public services that bring good health, prosperity and joy.
We arm the Ormocanon family with resilience, education, skills, and conducive industries in an environment that is safe from violence and disasters, abundant in pristine natural resources, rich in culture and heritage, and overflowing with pride, love, diligence and loyalty.
For when the family thrives, the whole city shines bringing light and hope to one and all.”
The former mayor and now Leyte 4th District Representative Richard Gomez also recalled what Ormoc was and its substantial changes of which there was a positive impact to city residents.
“Ormoc used to be a scary place, it is not anymore that, Ormoc is a beautiful city now, it has been at the most progressive city in region 8. We continuously work hard to make sure that Ormoc will be prosperous, that its people will be progressive and that each and every one in this society will become happy people, this is what the sculpture is all about.” Rep. Gomez said.
